OHME! Foods, a freeze-dried snack company co-founded by Jenny and Han Yue, has transitioned from a small side hustle to a business poised to reach $1 million in annual revenue. This remarkable journey began with a personal health challenge and a New Year’s resolution to prioritize better eating habits.
Inspiration Behind OHME!
The idea for OHME! Foods emerged during the pandemic when Jenny, working from home and caring for their young child, faced significant stress and health issues. After gaining over 50 pounds in a short period, she and her husband decided to make a change. They began their health journey by replacing less nutritious breakfast options with oats, yogurt, and fruit. However, they soon found that healthy eating could become monotonous.
In their quest for enjoyable, nutrient-dense toppings, Han recalled the freeze-dried fruit he had enjoyed as a child. This sparked the couple’s experimentation with freeze-drying various fruits at home, which ultimately led to the creation of OHME! Foods.
Launching with a Modest Investment
To bring their idea to life, the Yues invested approximately $5,000 in equipment and ingredients. They purchased a freeze-dryer and rented a commercial kitchen, allowing them to quickly test their products in front of real customers. Their first sales opportunity came at a local farmers’ market in July 2023, where they could observe customer reactions and gather valuable feedback.
Farmers’ markets served as both a sales platform and a research lab, enabling the Yues to refine their product based on direct consumer interactions. This approach proved essential in validating their offerings and understanding their target market.
Lessons Learned from Farmers’ Markets
Reflecting on their journey, Jenny acknowledges that if they could change one aspect of their approach, it would be to establish repeatable sales channels sooner. While farmers’ markets provided invaluable insights and customer engagement, relying solely on them for revenue posed challenges. Missed market days due to weather or attendance fluctuations could significantly impact sales.
In hindsight, Jenny emphasizes the importance of treating each market appearance as an opportunity not only for sales but also for building a customer base. Collecting email addresses and engaging with customers could have enhanced their marketing efforts and revenue stability.
Looking Ahead: Aiming for $1 Million
With the foundation laid and initial success achieved, OHME! Foods is now on track to reach $1 million in annual revenue. The Yues’ commitment to health and quality, combined with their innovative approach to freeze-dried snacks, positions them well for future growth. Their story serves as a reminder that personal challenges can lead to entrepreneurial opportunities, and with determination, a side hustle can evolve into a thriving business.
