Cathy Hughes, the founder of Urban One, recently received the prestigious key to Washington, D.C., an honor that recognizes her significant contributions to the city and Black media. During her appearance on The QuickSilva Morning Show on 92Q, Hughes emphasized that this recognition is not solely hers but belongs to every employee at Urban One.

Presented by Mayor Muriel Bowser, the key symbolizes the hard work and dedication of the Urban One team. Hughes noted that only six keys have been awarded during Bowser’s tenure, with Hughes being the sole female recipient. This accolade holds special significance for Hughes, who began her media journey in Washington, D.C., before expanding her influence to Baltimore and across the nation.

Hughes’ Vision for Black Media

Reflecting on her career, Hughes shared that she never followed a master plan. Instead, she pursued a vision she felt was divinely inspired, aimed at giving a voice to Black communities. Her mission has evolved from radio to television with TV One and into digital media through iOne Digital, creating platforms for Black narratives.

Empowering Black Voices

Hughes articulated the importance of self-representation in media, stating, “We can’t count on other cultures to tell who we are and what’s important to us.” This philosophy has driven her to build the largest Black-owned media company in the United States, providing opportunities for countless media professionals.

Celebrating Team Achievements

In her interview, Hughes credited Urban One employees as her “destiny guides,” acknowledging their vital role in fulfilling the company’s mission. To celebrate this recognition, she announced plans for a gathering where employees can take photos with the key and commemorate the honor together.

A Collective Honor

Hughes concluded her discussion by reiterating that while the key is in her name, it represents the collective effort of everyone at Urban One. This recognition not only highlights her achievements but also serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of her team in the media landscape.
