OpenAI’s Data Plugin Turns ChatGPT Into a Reporting Layer

Small businesses can use the new Data plugin in ChatGPT Work and Codex to analyze connected business data, build dashboards, and automate recurring management reports without custom BI setup.

A lighter way to get recurring business reporting

For small businesses that rely on spreadsheets, exports, and manual copy-paste to understand what is happening in the business, OpenAI’s new Data plugin support in ChatGPT Work and Codex is less about novelty than about reducing reporting friction. According to OpenAI’s Business release notes, the Data plugin launched in ChatGPT Work and Codex on September 10, 2026, and is designed to help users analyze connected business data, ask business questions, investigate changes, and create interactive dashboards or reports in the same conversation.

That matters because many solo operators and small teams do not need a full business intelligence stack to answer everyday questions. They need a faster way to see sales snapshots, cash-flow movement, customer segments, support trends, and weekly KPI summaries. OpenAI’s product materials say Data can be used to investigate metrics, analyze product or business performance, design KPIs, build dashboards or reports, and turn business questions into source-backed decisions.

What small businesses can actually use it for

The practical opportunity is to replace ad hoc spreadsheet work with a repeatable reporting workflow. OpenAI’s research brief says the plugin can work with connected company data and business context, and it can support follow-up questions in the same conversation. That makes it useful for recurring management reporting, where owners often ask the same questions every week: Which channel produced the most leads? Which service line is slowing down? Which customers are driving repeat revenue? Where did cash move this month?

OpenAI also says the plugin can prompt installation of needed third-party data-source plugins from within the conversation and is designed to work with existing BI tools and data-enrichment connectors. For a small business, that lowers setup friction. Instead of building a custom dashboard from scratch, a team can connect the data it already has and use ChatGPT as a layer for analysis and presentation.

The biggest business value is speed. If a founder can get a usable dashboard or report without hiring a BI specialist or spending hours cleaning exports, that can save time and make weekly decision-making more consistent. It can also help smaller teams spot problems earlier, such as declining sales in one segment, rising support volume, or a cash-flow pattern that needs attention before it becomes a larger issue.

Access, controls, and the limits that still matter

OpenAI’s release notes say workspace admins control the plugin’s installation policy, and members can invoke it with @Data once it is enabled in the workspace. That means this is not a free-for-all tool; access depends on how the business configures its ChatGPT workspace and connected accounts. OpenAI’s help material also says connected-account permissions determine what data can be analyzed.

For owners, that is a useful reminder that the feature is only as broad as the data access you grant it. The upside is convenience. The tradeoff is governance. Businesses that want to use Data for reporting should decide in advance which sources are appropriate for analysis, who can use them, and what should stay out of the workspace.

OpenAI also says its Business workspace is governed by Business Terms and Enterprise Privacy commitments, and that it does not train on workspace data. For small businesses handling internal numbers, that policy detail is part of the adoption decision. The feature is most compelling for owners who already keep their operating data in connected systems and want a faster way to turn that data into weekly decisions, not just prettier charts.

Why this is an opportunity, not just a feature

OpenAI Academy’s separate small-business workshop with SCORE reinforces the same direction: the company is positioning ChatGPT as a practical business tool for marketing, customer communication, administrative work, and workflow building. The Data plugin extends that idea into reporting and analysis. For small businesses, that creates a simple opportunity: use ChatGPT not only to write faster, but to manage faster.

That is where the real payoff sits. A solo operator who can review sales, cash, and customer trends in one place is better positioned to make pricing changes, adjust marketing spend, tighten operations, and catch risks earlier. The feature does not replace sound bookkeeping or proper financial controls, but it can make the reporting layer cheaper, faster, and easier to use.
