12 Things all Small Business Owners MUST DO to be taken Seriously

Professional/Catchy and Unique Business Name

I can use myself as an example here. My magazine when created in 1995 was originally called “Radio Fax” I eventually changed it to Radio Facts (http://radiofacts.com) but most of my competitors have the word “Urban” in the name of their brand which I felt would limit my brand to one audience. I could have called it “Urban Radio Facts” but why? It##Q##s a mistake to do something like that because you could be isolating your core or the corporations that will support your core. As a small business owner NEVER give an advertiser or client an excuse this easy for backing out of supporting you. Unfortunately, they will probably never tell you that your business name is a HUGE turn off, they just wont support you. I get things from business owners with names like “SisterLove” which is fine if you ONLY want to market your brand to women. Think about WHO your target audience AND your financial supporters are and don##Q##t isolate them, come up with something unique that##Q##s not like your competitors and make sure it##Q##s not tacky if you are targeting corporate clients.

There’s Some business You Just WON’T Get… How to Make it Work to Your Advantage

I was once told by a client… “Most people do business with you because they like you.” While that doesn’t say much about the product, what he said certainly does have merit. After all, there are also people who DON’T do business with you, sans a great product, because they DON’T like you. [...]

Secrets of Successful black entrepreneurs

By Michael Glauser, Next Avenue Contributor The Silicon Valley approach for building companies has become the main strategy taught at many business schools. It goes like this: You create a prototype you can quickly test, preferably in the tech industry. You find a group of users and gain proof of concept. You raise capital and scale the business as rapidly as possible. You plan an exit strategy that may include going public or selling to an industry buyer. You shoot for a 10X return to investors. [...]
