Small retailers can use Google’s new AI visibility reports, YouTube ad agent beta, and feed upgrades to improve holiday discovery without simply spending more.

Holiday discovery is shifting toward AI surfaces

For small retailers, the most useful part of Google’s latest holiday-shopping update is not that it adds another ad product. It is that Google is giving merchants a clearer way to see whether shoppers are finding them through AI-driven shopping experiences such as AI Mode and AI Overviews. According to Google’s Sep. 16 update, AI performance insights in Merchant Center are now generally available in the U.S. and several other markets, and the report compares a brand’s share of voice with similar brands across those surfaces. Google’s help materials, as summarized in the research brief, say the report can also show conversational shopping-intent queries and trends by shopping stage.

That matters because small businesses usually do not have the budget to outspend larger competitors during the holidays. If AI search is already shaping discovery, then the practical question is not only how much to bid, but whether the product feed is strong enough to appear in the first place. The new report gives merchants a way to check that before peak season traffic arrives.

What small retailers should do first in Merchant Center

The clearest opportunity is to treat AI performance insights as a diagnostic tool. If a store sees weak visibility in AI surfaces, the likely fix is not a bigger media budget alone. Google’s own holiday guidance points merchants toward feed quality, conversational attributes, and loyalty data. The research brief also says the update implies a holiday playbook built around monitoring AI visibility, tightening product titles and attributes for conversational queries, and improving loyalty data where relevant.

Google says merchants adopting core Merchant Center feed best practices see a 5% increase in conversions the following month on average. That figure is not a guarantee for any one business, but it does support a simple operational takeaway: better product data can create measurable upside without changing the product itself. For a small retailer, that can mean checking whether titles are specific enough, whether attributes match how shoppers actually ask questions, and whether member pricing or shipping perks are visible where appropriate.

YouTube ads get a new research layer

Google is also inviting eligible retailers into the Business Agent beta for YouTube ads in the U.S. The company says the agent can be embedded directly in YouTube ads so viewers can ask product questions and get tailored guidance without leaving the video context. For smaller brands, that is most relevant for products that need explanation before purchase: apparel, home goods, specialty gifts, and other higher-consideration items.

The business case is straightforward. If a shopper can ask a question inside the ad instead of bouncing away to search elsewhere, the retailer may be able to move that person closer to purchase without paying for another click path. That does not remove the need for strong creative or good targeting, and Google’s materials frame this as a beta, not a finished universal feature. But it does create a new testable option for merchants that want more qualified traffic rather than more traffic overall.

Checkout and feed quality are the real leverage points

Google is also updating Universal Commerce Protocol integration in Merchant Center to simplify agentic commerce checkout integrations, with new capabilities rolling out gradually in the U.S. The research brief says the broader merchant materials point to newer feed fields and conversational attributes as part of the discovery strategy. For small businesses, the operational lesson is that AI commerce tools only help if the underlying catalog and checkout setup are clean enough to support them.

That makes this update less about chasing a shiny feature and more about reducing friction. If a retailer already sells through Google surfaces, the near-term holiday checklist is practical: review Merchant Center visibility, update product titles and attributes, add conversational details where they improve relevance, and confirm whether loyalty data or checkout integrations are worth enabling. The upside is not guaranteed, but the path to better performance is unusually concrete: improve the feed, test the agentic ad experience where eligible, and use the new insights to see whether shoppers are actually finding the business through AI-powered discovery.
