Google’s latest agentic commerce updates give small retailers new ways to improve discoverability, answer product questions inside ads, and reduce checkout friction before peak season.

What small retailers can use right now

Google’s Sept. 16 holiday-shopping update is useful for small retailers because it is not just another advertising announcement. It adds tools that can help merchants get found in AI-driven shopping results, answer buyer questions inside YouTube ads, and streamline checkout on Google surfaces. For businesses heading into peak season, that combination matters because it can affect conversion, not just traffic.

Google says AI performance insights in Merchant Center are now generally available in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the U.S. The report shows how a brand is discovered across AI Mode and AI Overviews and compares share of voice with other brands. Google also says merchants can use the report to improve product titles, descriptions and missing attributes. For small retailers, that makes the feature more like an AI-search optimization dashboard than a vanity metric.

Why this matters for holiday sales

The most immediate opportunity is to tighten product feeds before shoppers start comparing gifts. Google’s verified research brief says merchants adopting core Merchant Center feed best practices see a 5% increase in conversions the following month, on average. That is not a guarantee for every store, but it is a concrete reason to audit product data now rather than after holiday demand peaks.

Google also says retailers can improve feeds with conversational attributes, video link attributes and loyalty data. The research brief notes that conversational attributes can add richer context to listings, while loyalty data can surface member perks and pricing. In testing with lululemon, conversational attributes submitted by the brand were incorporated 50% of the time in relevant product recommendations in AI Mode. For retailers selling products that need explanation, comparison or bundling, that kind of context can help shoppers move from browsing to buying faster.

New ways to reduce friction in the buying path

Google is also expanding Business Agent for YouTube ads in the U.S. According to Google, the tool embeds directly within YouTube ads so viewers can ask complex product questions and get tailored guidance without leaving the video experience. The research brief adds that Business Agent uses website content and Merchant Center shopping data, can be customized in Merchant Center, and can be activated quickly by Shopify stores through the Google & YouTube app.

That makes the beta especially relevant for retailers that sell products with lots of pre-purchase questions: apparel, accessories, home goods, electronics, gifts and bundles. Instead of sending a shopper to a separate FAQ page, the ad itself can answer objections. For a small retailer, that can save time on repetitive customer support and potentially improve ad efficiency by keeping shoppers in the buying flow longer.

Checkout and loyalty are part of the opportunity

Google is also expanding its Universal Commerce Protocol integration hub in Merchant Center. The verified brief says merchants can join a waitlist to implement UCP on Google AI surfaces, with support for direct buying, guest checkout or account-linked checkout, Google Pay integration and order-status webhooks. Google says merchants keep merchant-of-record control and customer relationships. The March 19, 2026 UCP update also added real-time product details, multi-item cart support and identity linking for loyalty benefits.

For small retailers, the practical takeaway is simple: if checkout friction is costing sales, Google is trying to shorten that path. The new cart-transfer and checkout-flow testing capabilities rolling out in the U.S. could help merchants identify where buyers drop off before purchase. That is especially useful during holiday traffic spikes, when even small friction points can mean lost revenue.

Retailers should treat these updates as a short checklist: clean up product titles and missing attributes, add conversational details where customers ask questions, connect loyalty data if available, and test whether YouTube ad support or UCP checkout can reduce abandonment. The features are still rolling out and some are gated by eligibility or waitlists, so merchants should verify access before planning around them. But for small businesses that depend on holiday demand, Google’s new stack is aimed squarely at making discovery easier and checkout faster.
