Small retailers can use Google’s latest Merchant Center, YouTube ads, and checkout updates to improve discovery and reduce purchase friction this season.

Why this matters for small retailers

Google’s Sept. 16 retail update is not just a platform refresh; it is a set of tools that can help merchants find more holiday shoppers, answer objections earlier, and shorten the path to checkout. For small retailers, the opportunity is practical: improve how products appear in AI-powered discovery, make ads more useful before a shopper clicks away, and remove friction at the point of purchase.

According to Google, AI performance insights in Merchant Center are now generally available in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the U.S. The feature shows how a brand and its products are discovered across AI Mode and AI Overviews, giving merchants a way to see where visibility is weak and where product data may need work. Google says the goal is to help businesses improve discoverability.

Use the new insights to fix product discovery

For a small retailer, the immediate value is diagnostic. If shoppers are finding competitors more often in AI-driven surfaces, that is a signal to tighten product titles, descriptions, and feed quality. Google’s own guidance in the update points merchants toward conversational attributes and loyalty data, which suggests that product feeds now need to answer natural-language shopping queries, not just list specs.

Google also says merchants adopting core Merchant Center feed best practices see a 5% increase in conversions the following month. That claim is platform-reported, so it should be treated as directional rather than guaranteed, but it reinforces the same point: feed quality is now a revenue lever, not a back-office task. For retailers with limited ad budgets, improving the feed may be one of the cheapest ways to improve holiday performance.

Turn YouTube ads into a pre-sale conversation

Google is also opening a U.S. beta for Business Agent in YouTube ads. For eligible retailers, the tool embeds conversational help directly inside the ad so viewers can ask product questions without leaving the YouTube context. That matters because many small businesses lose shoppers between curiosity and checkout; if a buyer has to open a new tab to compare sizes, shipping, or compatibility, the sale can stall.

The business use case is straightforward: use the ad itself to answer objections before the click. A retailer selling gifts, apparel, home goods, or specialty products can reduce uncertainty by letting shoppers ask questions in the ad experience. Google says this is intended to move shoppers from inspiration to purchase-ready, which makes it especially relevant for holiday campaigns where intent can be high but attention is short.

Shorten checkout and reduce abandonment

Google also expanded the Universal Commerce Protocol integration hub in Merchant Center. Merchants using UCP-powered checkout can now add cart transfer to a merchant site and enhanced checkout-flow testing, with more analytics coming later. The rollout is starting in the U.S. and will later expand to Australia and Canada. Google says UCP already supports direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers across Google.

For small retailers, this is an opportunity to reduce checkout friction without rebuilding the whole commerce stack. Cart transfer can help preserve intent when a shopper moves from Google surfaces to the merchant site, and checkout-flow testing can expose where buyers drop off. That matters during the holiday rush, when even small friction points can cost orders.

What to do now

Small retailers should treat this update as a holiday action list. First, review Merchant Center performance insights to see how products are discovered in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Second, clean up feeds with conversational attributes, accurate product details, and loyalty data where relevant. Third, if eligible, test the YouTube ads Business Agent beta to answer buyer questions earlier. Fourth, evaluate whether UCP-powered checkout and cart transfer can reduce abandonment on mobile and in high-intent campaigns.

Google’s update is not a guarantee of growth, and some features are still limited by geography or beta access. But the business logic is clear: the retailers most likely to benefit are the ones that make their products easier to find, easier to understand, and easier to buy.
