Toxic Smoke from BioLab Fire Threatens Atlanta: Shelter in Place Issued (Video)

Chlorine Levels Spike After BioLab Fire

A chemical fire at the BioLab facility in Rockdale County has left residents and businesses feeling the effects for several days. The fire, which initially started four days ago, caused a massive smoke cloud to form, containing dangerous chemicals such as chlorine and hydrochloric acid. Overnight, chlorine levels spiked as the smoke cloud continued to linger, raising concerns among local officials and residents.

The chemical fire, although now extinguished, is still causing a lot of disruption. Reactions from inside the facility continue to release chemical-laden smoke into the atmosphere, prompting local authorities to issue warnings. Residents in the area have reported being able to “taste” and “feel” the effects of the smoke on their skin, with some describing the cloud as “thick and heavy.” Local resident Mitch Hinson emphasized the seriousness of the situation, explaining that this was not just a “small little forest fire,” but a major chemical emergency that needs urgent attention.

City of Atlanta Under Smoke Threat

Due to the changing wind patterns, smoke from the fire has begun shifting toward the City of Atlanta, raising further alarm about the potential spread of harmful chemicals. The yellowish hue of the smoke has been particularly concerning to those monitoring the situation, as it indicates the presence of hazardous substances. Earlier in the day, the smoke was a pure white color, but it later turned a more ominous yellow. As a precautionary measure, Atlanta officials have issued a shelter-in-place advisory for residents from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Authorities, including the American National Lung Association, have issued warnings for individuals with preexisting health conditions to take extra precautions, as they are at higher risk from the chemicals in the smoke. Officials have also cautioned people to avoid exposure to the smoke whenever possible.

Business Closures and Impact on Daily Life

The ongoing chemical emergency has severely impacted local businesses and daily life in Rockdale County. Hinson, who operates a business selling ink supplies, explained how the smoke has affected his operations. His business is situated in the direct path of the smoke cloud, making it difficult to stay open. He noted that visibility has been reduced to the point where “you couldnโ€™t see 10, 15, 20 feet in front of you.” The combination of the smoke and other recent events, such as a hurricane the previous week, has resulted in his business being shut down for nearly a week. He described the situation as frustrating, especially with no clear resolution in sight.

In addition to business disruptions, schools in Rockdale County are currently on fall break, while government offices have been forced to close for the remainder of the week. The county’s shelter-in-place order, active from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., remains in effect as officials work to contain the situation.

History of BioLab Fires in the Area

This is not the first time the BioLab facility has experienced a major fire. Hinson recounted a similar incident in 2004, when a fire and subsequent chemical plume led to significant disruptions in the area. Another fire occurred in 2020, further compounding concerns about the safety of the facility and its ongoing operations.

In light of these repeated incidents, local residents and business owners have filed a petition to have the BioLab facility moved from its current location. Additionally, attorneys are preparing a class action lawsuit, arguing that the recurring chemical fires are a major public safety concern that needs to be addressed urgently. Hinson, among others, expressed frustration with the lack of concrete action and demanded that officials figure out a long-term solution to prevent future fires.

Efforts to Contain the Chemical Hazard

Fire officials are working cautiously to remove the remaining chemicals inside the BioLab facility, but the process is slow. The danger of continued chemical reactions makes it difficult for crews to clear the site quickly. Throughout the day, roads have been closed to limit exposure to the smoke, and authorities are closely monitoring the air quality in the surrounding areas.

Despite the ongoing concerns, officials have stated that the overall air quality remains safe for most people. However, those with preexisting conditions should remain vigilant and follow recommended safety protocols. The shelter-in-place advisory will continue until officials are confident that the danger has subsided.

Conclusion

The chemical fire at BioLab has left a lasting impact on Rockdale County, with smoke still lingering and affecting nearby communities. As the smoke shifts toward Atlanta, officials are urging residents to take precautions, especially those with health vulnerabilities. The situation has reignited calls for stronger safety measures at the BioLab facility, with residents and attorneys pushing for its relocation. In the meantime, efforts to safely remove chemicals and clear the area are ongoing, with local authorities keeping a close watch on the evolving situation.
