  • Entrepreneur Burnout: Most Important Things to Avoid it

i-m-too-stressed-21631901Yep, first and foremost we KNOW it takes a GREAT deal of effort to hire someone in the first place, you are concerned about paying them and you have to take the time to train them. You wonder if it##Q##s worth it. The answer my friends is YES it is. You will KILL yourself working 14 hour days, the years will fly by and you will not have a life. I know MANY entrepreneurs who endure this on a day to day and it##Q##s not smart. You CAN hire someone and you DON##Q##T have to do the work yourself, you just have to find ways to pay them like hiring them a month at a time or part time. When we make money that is NOT the time to go out and treat yourself to a new car or some extravagant gift (though you should treat yourself) but this is the time to ease the tension and to fork over some of the day to day to someone else to free you up to focus on the things you probably have been ignoring like sales or billing. You will certainly hire the wrong people from time to time as I have and here are some suggestions to avoid costly mistakes in hiring… (click “NEXT” after each segment above or below)

  • 8 Reason's You Should NOT do Favors in Business

images-cut_nothatefulYou work hard for what you have and you have done a great job at holding it together. Don##Q##t waste your valuable business time and energy on people who want you to bend over backwards to offer them services for free or at outrageous discounts. People of ALL business types will try to pull a fast one on you by asking for unreasonable things that don##Q##t help you grow they actually HURT your business. Keep in mind, IF THEY CONTACT YOU… YOU are in the driver##Q##s seat baby. NOT THEM. Don##Q##t give them control of the road that leads to YOU and what you have to offer. Read on…. • Use Your Experience To Grow Your Brand

dead-flowersEveryone that I associate with is an entrepreneur. BUT only 2 of them are TRUE entrepreneurs. You may ask what a true entrepreneur is, it is someone who is not afraid to grow and to take his or her experience and expand on his or her knowledge. What is that you can do? I can use myself as an example. One of my recent college classes was Speech. One of those classes that are required before you can move into your major. I was defiant, my ego kicked in hard time, I thought I already know this, I am a radio jock by trade, I have excellent communication skills and I was insulted that the teacher wanted me to prove something I had already proven for over 2o years but the joke was on me. Read on and you will see why…. (click “NEXT” or next number above or below to see the rest of the story)

You’re NEVER too Old to Learn Something New

The minute that you stop learning YOU STOP GROWING. Don’t EVER think that you know it all. We get older and things change, and eventually we are out of touch. When that happens and you want to continue doing what you have been doing (AND) you are still making money (why keep doing something that you have to beg for clients for?) hire someone who can duplicate you. Someone younger who knows your industry from an different angle. Once you learn the formula you don’t have to keep doing the grind. When you make money it’s time to spend it ON THE BUSINESS but not frivolously.

Use older people in your profession to teach you a valuable lesson

3wilfredemmanueljonesI go to two types of industry events where people my age go, those who are very successful and still in the loop and to those where the people go who never grow and are stuck on yesterday and what used to be. There are people who work in the industry who are well into their 60s but most of that small population are extremely successful. There are others who hang on waiting for another basic opportunity at 50 years of age. They eventually become bitter and/or sad and they feel as if the industry threw them away but the truth is, they were not prepared and it’s very depressing to watch. Had I not started my own business, for example, in my early 30s I would not still be in the music industry today. There was no way I would have allowed myself to be a 50 year old DJ unless I was Rick Dees or Casey Kasem but there are 50 year old DJs and older who are still where they were 20 years ago. That may be perfectly fine for them but it would not have been OK for me. A few years ago, I went to a party for a man who was leaving LA. He had worked in the industry for 40 years and he was ready to retire and he was moving to another state. I went to his event and there were many older people there in their 60s and 70s. It was literally like an old folks home. They were just sitting there as if someone had stolen the life out of them. They were barely talking or smiling they were just sitting there. These people were HUGE in the music industry 20 or 30 years ago but the industry was done with them and it was like they were lost without the industry. Someone whipped out a stack of photo albums from 30 years ago and those people lit up like Christmas trees. They were laughing, singing, dancing and having an amazing time by connecting to what was. It was terribly unfortunate to me but I was glad to see them happy. At the same time, I realized I did not want that to be me when I get older. When I get older (God willing) I want to STILL be working, producing and connected to great current things and people. What I am basically saying is, if you want to see who you will become in 20 years by doing what you are doing now, talk to one of those people and see what kind of advice they can give you based on where you are now. I’m willing to BET you they will tell you to diversify your talents.

What else can you do with what you know?

For me, being a broadcasting professional with excellent communication skills makes the sky the limit, but ONLY if I am willing to explore the opportunities. I am often amazed at how many minority radio people NEVER step outside the radio realm. Having excellent communication skills is KEY to SO many things, motivational speaker, actor, voice talent, TV Host, Event host, Media Contact for a corporation the list goes on and on but a LOT more than radio. I left Radio in 1999 before I was 40 and I have not regretted one day of it. I knew it was time for me to make room for new talent and I really didn’t enjoy it anymore. We must understand that we cannot do the same thing forever unless we love it that much and even them, it is not promised if a corporation wants to bring in someone younger.

Education is not only Key it’s Business LIFE AND DEATH

School EducationThere are ALWAYS seminars and events happening. Here in LA I learn about things in the paper on Thursdays and because I have a leading industry site, I get invited to a LOT of events. Next year, I hope to go to the Cannes Film Fest for the first time, I’ve been invited several times to many events but I would rarely go. I was burnt out from doing the industry scene for 20 years… but then I realized, as long as people invite you SHOULD go because you never know who you may meet to bolster your career. It’s time to take advantage of these things and people are watching you, even though you may not know it, they are watching and if they perceive you as having value you will notice that you will start getting invitations to events. If not, go on your own and make contacts or call and ask them to put you on the list. The more people that you meet who do what you do and beyond, the better.

Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you…

smarter-5th-graderThere was a time that I found myself being the go-to guy for other entrepreneurs, it was very frustrating for me because while I was feeding everyone, nobody was feeding me. I was drained and it took me a while to realize I had to change my social circles because I had conquered my ability to do what I do. I was now an expert and I was either going to move on or remain stuck, which inevitably will destroy your business because current clients don’t last forever and you must ALWAYS be in search of new clients. I had outgrown this group of people and there was no room for growth just stagnation.

Eliminate those Entrepreneurs Around You who Refuse to grow

dead-flowersOne again, this is saying the same thing as I said before. One trick I pull on what I call “lazy entrepreneurs” (people who are always looking for something for free, then they can’t understand why they can’t grow). If I need the advice of a publicity person, for example, I will take them to lunch. That blows them away because they are not used to someone treating them like that, just to pick their brain. I think it shows supreme respect for what they do and I am indicating that I want to be treated the same way. When I do that, they stop calling and asking me for free things because I have raised the bar on them. They can’t, don’t or perhaps won’t usually match the offer in kind so they would rather just not call at all which is fine with me. Usually, I remove their number from my phone but I keep it on my computer’s address book in case I need them again and I will do the same thing. But I have learned that when you call a lazy entrepreneur for a friendly conversation, you open the floodgates to be used for free again. Choose your entrepreneur friends WISELY and treat THEM the way YOU want to be treated.

Take Speech Classes or Offer to Speak about Your Brand at an event

lectureCommunity colleges offer so many courses for next to nothing or absolutely free. I’m telling you. I have used parts from all the classes I THOUGHT were useless and I am glad I took them because they DO help to grow your business.  When you are in your 20s and you are a college student, there is no way you can see or use the value as much as you can when you are older. Just about everyone that I know who went to college after high school and got their degrees… none of them are using it. They are all doing something else. Do any of us know what we want to do after high school? Probably not but we do know what we want to do as adults and we are in a better position to take advantage of learning because we have probably experienced these situations in real life by now.  Check out your local colleges and see if they have something that you might be interested in taking to help you grow your brand. Another benefit, if your brand is youth driven this is a GREAT opportunity to connect with younger people and have something in common with them that can open the doors to get more information about trends.

Join REAL Social Networks for your hobbies

64816184_1356498786Many people take Facebook and Twitter to useless new levels. They get way too personal posting WAY too much info about their personal lives, kids, jobs, events, homes, hobbies, parents, hospital visits, personal problems and more. I almost got caught up in that once cause it’s so easy but I had to stop when someone busted me revealing too much. FaceBook has a way of telling too much about you and it’s not a good place for entrepreneurs. I don’t have time to debate someone’s religious or conspiracy theories or watch old videos from the 80s. Many people on FB ares desperately seeking validation, by getting likes and support from others a study showed, and it’s true. After a while its a waste of time and effort when you could be making REAL social connections with people FACE to FACE not face to facebook.  On top of all that, where does this information end up that you are posting? I personally don’t really trust social networks as much as I do a face to face meeting where I can gauge who I dealing with.

  • Stunted Growth: Biggest Mistakes Black Business Owners

XP3College_About_ImageHere is an excerpt from my book Mind Your Own Damn Business. These are some of the biggest mistakes I have seen many black business owners make and the lesson’s I’ve learned the hard way over the years. PLEASE NOTE, this is not applicable to all black entrepreneurs but these are the entrepreneurs that I personally steer clear of. The bottom line, don’t ask anyone for something you are not willing to give yourself. Enjoy… (click “Next” above or below to see more)

    We’ve got some GREAT ideas…but

Silhouette of man with bulb - idea in hand. illustrationI’ve seen and heard some of the most remarkable ideas from black potential entrepreneurs. Everything from music production to publishing to specialty restaurants to wedding planner to hair and make-up break-thru formulas. There are many fields where African American’s dominate but have little or no control of the business. The most prevalent of those area are: Sports, Entertainment, Hair and Specialty Foods. Why are you giving your ideas away when the business could be YOURS? And where is the implementation? We have ideas but no way of implementing them and no plans as to how it can be done. Before you tell ANYONE what your plan is, figure out how you can do it FIRST.

Hook a Brotha Up!!! (how incredibly annoying)

9969439-closeup-of-a-businessman-with-a-tin-cup-begging-for-change-white-background-1These are the people that you usually only hear from only when they need something from you…they only call on people for favors in business but expect to be paid top dollar when they give help to someone else. We don’t want to be ripped off or taken advantage of but a lot of the time, it is exactly what WE do and worse yet to our black contacts. We dare not ask our white contacts to “hook us up?”  We want special treatment again and again or we deliver half backed goods for a fully cooked price. Please know that while people will do you favors from time to time, it becomes annoying when you are CONSTANTLY calling them for favors. We don’t often know when to be classy about the exchange either. I’ve had “friends” call me for concert tickets not just for themselves but for 3 other people too. That’s tacky and nobody wants to be used. Moreover, if you keep calling in favors the person you are calling will eventually stop taking your calls. Then we often accuse them of “going Hollywood” and “forgetting about where THEY came from”

“The world REALLY does not owe you anything”

Debt-for-CanadiansIt would be nice if the world was our never-ending credit card, streaming endless currency to us whenever we wanted it.  Just because you have struggled in the past, it does not mean the world owes you something in return. I myself thought this too which was why I started my first business. I thought people should buy from me FIRST because I’m Black… WRONG! People should buy from you first because you area great resource for them and provide the services they need.  Complaining ALWAYS looks like sour grapes. Even if there is legitimacy to what you see in racism or favoritism, the people you are accusing of it don’t and will never see it the same way YOU look at it or they will shut down on you and not deal with you. Yuu will look like the bad guy. There are just some things that are KNOWN and don’t need to be said. Do you really think someone is going to give you an opportunity after you attack them?  HELL NO, they are not…. and I guarantee you that you will get very old and very bitter, very quick waiting. I’ve seen it happen time and again.

Use Your Current Job as College or Temporarily Work in the Field You’d like to Start Your Business In

XP3College_About_ImageNo matter how much we hate our current jobs the best way to look at the situation, I’ve learned, is to start using my jobs as “college.” I used Urban Network that way when I worked there many years ago. There was a lot of strife, in-fighting and power struggles amongst the management. I let them beat the hell out of each other while I learned how the system worked. When they fired me, which I knew they would eventually, I took what I learned and started my own industry trade magazine and there was nothing they could do about it. My employer became my competitor and my brand is still around. I’m not bragging, I’m making a point. Look at your job as  I’m taking a course and I’m getting a stipend for learning. I give the job a certain amount of time to complete the required courses and when I’m done, I’m ready to graduate to earn my next degree in business. If I wanted to open a coffee shop, I’d go and work at Starbucks for a year. What an invaluable experience and education that would be FIRST HAND…. AND I would be getting paid for it? Instead of going broke going to some overpriced college that wants me to take out student loans to learn how to do it for 2 years. Then I owe for my education when I could have gotten it, not just for FREE but PAID for it? I’m sure you get the point.

“Never tell anyone your plans, goals and dreams UNLESS they can help you”

Top-SecretAs black people, we have such a dire need for approval. Mostly because it drives not just us but the human race. But we must realize that people will never see for you what they can never see for themselves. If a young awkward looking, tall thin black girl tells her family or friends that she wants to be a model, they may laugh at her and she may accept that they are right and forget about her dream. Even though she grows up to be outrageously beautiful and her dream could have very well been a reality. The people she depended on didn’t believe in her which caused her not to believe in herself. This is why black entrepreneurs would never tell someone else they can’t do something. Because we learn through doing business that anything is possible and our confidence to have our own businesses skyrockets to a level we never thought possible. If the potential model pursues that goal without telling her family, they will usually be the same people who will say “I always saw something special in her, I knew she would be a star” My cousin used to tell me “Everybody Loves a Winner!” and they want to be associated with them, even if they have nothing to do with their success. That’s our need for approval on the reverse. We want to take responsibility for all that’s great and shy away from what is negative. That’s not just black people, that’s the human race. So in essence, it is best to pursue your dream and keep your mouth shut, especially if the people you want to tell have no understanding of what you are pursuing. I have to tell the truth about my people, we can be some of the most negative people when it comes to encouraging each other.

    It’s all in the Presentation…

presentationThis is probably one of the MOST important things you will see in this guide. P-R-E-S-E-N-T-A-T-I-O-N! The picture is another kind of presentation which is also important but I’m talking about how you present your idea before you get to this point as well.
I don’t care what kind of business you have if you don’t present it, yourself or your documents right, you are almost DESTINED to fail. The first line of presentation is your idea. Just the other day a gentleman called me with an idea he had for a magazine. He was all over the place. I kept asking him if he had a business plan, you really don’t nee a FULL plan but just some idea of what you want to do.  I also asked him about start up capitol. He kept skirting around the questions. I asked him about investors and he didn’t trust anyone. As he went on and on about how he was going to get his business off the ground and the team he had in place, I lost interest. His lack of direction just sounded like someone mumbling after a while. It sounded like he was confused…. and if he sounds that way to me, how will he handle the business and how will he sound to anyone else that he presents this idea to? He made several common mistakes potential black business owners make they are as follows:

    • Disclosed his idea to me without the pieces in place.
    • Refused to listen to or even act like he was interested in hearing my advice based on my experience in already DOING what he is trying to do.
    • Shot down every idea I had for him to get his venture off the ground because he already has it all mapped out. (Then why is he talking to me?)
    • Expressed his lack of trust for everyone which makes me wonder if he trusts me or MORE important…. if HE can be trusted.
    • He already knows it all so I already know this is going to be a difficult situation to work in and usually the way you start out is the best indicator of how you will end up. If he won’t listen to me now, he never will.
    • This is his idea, he doesn’t trust anyone, he wants it done a certain way, he needs my help and/or advice and he has no money? This, mind you, is something that it has taken me almost 15 years to learn.. If you put yourself in my shoes, even for two minutes, you can see how this is not going to work for me. What is the chance that you think I will do business with someone like this? If you guessed never, you are right.

  • After Just 14 Months of Operation, Buttons and Bows, Named One of L.A.'s Top Boutiques, is Already on the Move to a Bigger Space

After Just 14 Months of Operation, Buttons Bows, Named One of L.A.##Q##s Top Boutiques, is Already on the Move to a Bigger SpaceWe never thought we’d have to relocate this soon. We’ve only been open for a year but we’re busting out of our space with a constant flow of some surreal designer inventory from our clients. It’s a great sign of growth I’m grateful for our customers the awesome press we’ve been getting,” says Aquino. Buttons Bows is a resale luxury boutique that sells gently loved vintage modern designer merchandise. Due to Marley’s Aquino’s impeccable curation of merchandise, the store has attracted shoppers from all over Southern California as well as visiting tourists alike, fueling the demand for more inventory a much larger space.

“We’re not moving far at all, just around the corner from our old location. We love Downtown we love being a part of the revitalization that is happening here,” says Marley. Aside from being fashion experts business owners, Aquino Marley are major leaders in growing the fashion retail scene in the Downtown area. The two are responsible for starting Shopwalk, a DTLA community effort, along with other shop owners, in where merchants along the historic core come together to offer their customers a day of in-store events, libations, special discounts offerings. The pair created it to spread awareness about the growing retail businesses in their neighborhood. Aside from Shopwalk, Aquino Marley specifically contribute to The Downtown LA Women’s Shelter through their regular donations of clothes that help contribute to the effort of getting women off the streets enter the job market.

Buttons Bows began as a personal fashion and style blog by Monique Aquino, which evolved into a successful e-bay store that sold Marley’s extensive collection of designer clothes and accessories that she no longer wanted. The e-bay business became a hit, leading to the founding of their first brick and mortar location on Main St. in Downtown Los Angeles. “Karen I always talked about opening a store our sales on e-bay proved to us that we could do it. We started small by opting for a humble space. That enabled us to test our market before we opted for larger store location,” says Aquino. The “start small grow big” strategy by friends and business partners, Marley Aquino, are certainly working well in their favor.

5040f702db03d.imageThe much anticipated opening of the new Buttons Bows boutique on 548 S. Spring St. R#112 is scheduled to hit the historic core later this month. Aquino and Marley chose a location that’s in the middle of the hustle and bustle of cafes, businesses, and other retail shops, while still remaining easily accessible to the dwellers of the Fashion and Art District. One year ago, Aquino remarked, “We really hope that it’s only a short matter of time before Buttons Bows becomes the city’s destination for a service-centered resale shopping experience.” This significant move proves that Aquino’s hopeful wish is quickly becoming a reality.

Karen Marley and Monique Aquino will release further news and updates about the launch through their blog on www.buttonsandbowsla.com/blog, and social media outlets:

  • Ways to Deal with Unscrupulous Competitors

Ways to Deal with Unscrupulous Competitors

A friend said something to me a long time ago that applies to this situation. Why get in the ring with someone, you have already beaten? If imitation is a highest form of flattery, what is straight copying what you do? I don##Q##t like that statement because it##Q##s not “flattering” when someone copies what you do on the surface but I get what that saying really means. It indicates you are not only on the right track, you have a winning formula. However, it still pisses you off that someone has completely stolen from you.

Coverage includes things like a Staten Island ferry trip with your dog, the best dog runs in Brooklyn, upstate vacations with dogs, and dog-friendly hotels in NYC. There will also be a section starting in May for dog obituaries, so dog owners can remember their dogs through words and photos.

DogSpin was incubated by Madison Square Ventures and is based in the Flatiron District of New York City. It is a work-in-progress and will continue to add articles, useful information, and functionality to make life in New York City more enjoyable with your dog.
