A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a series of violent crimes that shook the Northeast Philadelphia area over the past week. Tyree Hatch, identified as the suspect in three armed robberies and a shooting, is now in police custody, following an investigation that involved both the Philadelphia Police Department and the Montgomery County SWAT team. His arrest is being hailed as a significant achievement in keeping violent criminals off the streets of Philadelphia.

The Armed Robberies and Shooting Incident

The chain of events began with a terrifying armed robbery at a smoke shop on Cottman Avenue in Philadelphia on Sunday night. Hatch, who was reportedly a regular customer at the Cloud Nine Smoke Shop, entered the store wearing a mask, which initially obscured his identity. The store employee, who was later identified as a victim of the robbery, recalled that he didn’t recognize Hatch at first, but something seemed off.

The robber, brandishing a gun, shot the employee in the leg during the robbery. The victim described the encounter, saying that Hatch had tried to aim the gun directly at his eye, suggesting that the assailant may have intended to kill him. Despite the gunman’s attempts to kill him, the employee managed to fight back, grabbing the weapon and preventing the worst from happening.

The employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said that he had undergone one surgery already and was preparing for a second, but he expressed relief upon hearing that Hatch had been apprehended. Reflecting on the traumatic incident, the employee stated, “He tried to kill you for $200 or $300. That’s really bad.” The victim also shared that he had come to the United States to work for his family, further underlining the emotional and psychological toll the crime had on him.

Other Robberies Linked to Hatch

Police quickly identified Hatch as the suspect in not only the Cottman Avenue shooting but also two other robberies in the area. The first occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Exotic Convenience Store on Castor Avenue, where the suspect held employees at gunpoint and made off with cash. The second robbery took place on Monday at the Castor Smoke and Vape Shop. These two crimes, along with the shooting, were linked through police investigation, which included examining evidence, victim testimony, and security footage.

Before the Monday robbery, the Shooting Investigation Group (SIG) had already identified Hatch as the prime suspect. This was crucial information that allowed law enforcement to respond quickly. Within moments of the final robbery on Monday, officers from the second district, Officer Eichler and Officer McKenna, worked closely with SIG investigators. They tracked Hatch to a residence on Large Street, where they successfully initiated a barricade situation.

A Coordinated Effort to Apprehend Hatch

The arrest of Tyree Hatch was the result of a collaborative effort between local police and specialized units. Officers Eichler and McKenna were in the right place at the right time. After spotting a vehicle associated with the suspect near the house, they swiftly coordinated with other law enforcement agencies.

The authorities declared a barricade situation, ensuring the safety of all involved while working to secure the suspect’s apprehension. The operation was executed without incident, and Hatch was taken into custody safely, removing a violent felon from the streets just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The successful operation was commended by police officials, who praised the hard work and professionalism of Officers Eichler and McKenna. The arrest was also seen as an important victory in preventing further violence in the community, especially in the run-up to the holiday season. “We took a violent felon off the street by the work of these two good officers,” said one police official, expressing gratitude for the swift resolution of the case.

Search and Evidence Recovery

A subsequent search warrant was executed at Hatch’s home, where investigators recovered key pieces of evidence tying him to the three robberies. Among the items found was a gun that had been stolen from Bristol Township back in July, a critical piece of evidence that connected Hatch to the string of crimes. Hatch later confessed to all three robberies, further solidifying his role in these violent events.

Conclusion: A Community’s Relief

As the investigation continues, there is a palpable sense of relief among both law enforcement and the community. For the employee of the Cloud Nine Smoke Shop, who endured not only physical injury but also the trauma of being shot by someone he had once recognized as a regular customer, Hatch’s arrest brings some measure of closure. However, the emotional and physical scars from the incident remain, and the victim’s recovery is expected to take some time.

For Philadelphia’s police, the capture of Hatch represents a significant success in the ongoing battle against violent crime. By acting quickly and using a combination of traditional policing methods and modern investigative techniques, they were able to ensure that Hatch would not be able to harm anyone else. This case also underscores the importance of cooperation between local law enforcement and specialized units, as well as the critical role that officers on the ground play in apprehending dangerous criminals. With Hatch behind bars, there is hope that the streets of Philadelphia will be safer in the days ahead.
