OpenAI and Google are adding workflow and measurement tools that small businesses can use to automate content, tighten attribution, and improve holiday ROI.
Small businesses heading into holiday spending season have two practical levers in the latest OpenAI and Google updates: less manual work inside ChatGPT Business, and tighter testing and measurement inside Google Ads. The business value is not abstract. OpenAI’s release notes point to faster drafting, summarizing, analysis, and workflow automation. Google’s Rethink 2026 updates focus on helping advertisers test budgets, measure incrementality, and improve product feeds so they can spend with more confidence.
ChatGPT Business is becoming more useful for day-to-day operations
According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business release notes, ChatGPT for Word is now available. Teams can draft from notes, summarize documents, revise selected text, and adjust headings and formatting from the Word sidebar. The notes also say admins can control access, and Word usage is token-priced at API rates with plan token limits applying.
For a small business, that matters because Word is still where a lot of proposals, client updates, sales collateral, and internal SOPs are built. If a team can move from notes to a polished draft without copying text between tools, that can save time and reduce the friction that slows down sales follow-up or document production.
The same release notes add Model Test for admins to check member model access, Quick Chat and Appshots in desktop apps, the Data plugin for analyzing connected business data, updated Voice models and limits, Deep Research for cited web, file, and app investigations, and scheduled tasks or webhooks for Gmail, Slack, and GitHub. OpenAI also says Premium seats are available for heavier users at higher capacity and fixed pricing, and that custom GPTs are planned for retirement with a migration path to plugins.
That mix is operationally important for small teams standardizing how work gets done. The practical use cases are straightforward: automate meeting summaries, monitor leads or support messages through scheduled tasks, generate cited research for client work, and use the Data plugin to analyze connected business data without building a separate reporting stack. The custom GPT retirement note also means teams that rely on those workflows should plan migration rather than wait for a disruption.
Google Ads is pushing harder on testing and measurement
Google’s Rethink 2026 updates are framed around the upcoming AI-powered holiday season and better ROI. The company says AI Max now supports testing different budgets and ROI targets across multiple Search campaigns in a single A/B test, with a Performance Planner that shows the likely impact of bidding and budget changes. Google says this is meant to help advertisers scale Search more confidently without losing brand or location guardrails.
For small businesses, that is a direct answer to ad waste. Instead of guessing whether a budget shift will help, advertisers can use the new testing and planning tools to compare options before committing spend. That is especially useful for seasonal campaigns where a bad budget move can burn cash quickly.
Google’s measurement update adds Data Manager integrations into Google Analytics and DV360, enhanced conversions in GA and DV360, a universal Data Manager API, diagnostics, a new Data Strength Uplift metric, and Meridian and GeoX improvements for causal measurement and incrementality. The business takeaway is simple: if a business wants to know which ads actually drive sales, these tools are designed to make that decision clearer.
Google also says its Demand Gen update adds messaging-app conversation starts from YouTube ads, travel relevance features, and generally available multimodal video creation in Asset Studio. That gives smaller advertisers more ways to turn attention into leads, especially if they sell services or high-consideration products where a conversation matters more than a click.
Holiday commerce updates point to feed quality and first-party data
Google’s holiday-commerce update adds AI performance insights in Merchant Center, now available in the U.S. and several other markets, along with UCP checkout enhancements, conversational attributes, and loyalty-data support in product feeds. Google says merchants adopting core feed best practices see a 5% increase in conversions the following month, and it says conversational attributes were incorporated 50% of the time in relevant AI Mode recommendations during lululemon testing.
For ecommerce sellers, the message is that feed quality is not a back-office detail. Better product data, loyalty pricing, and checkout improvements can reduce friction at the exact point where ad spend turns into revenue. The 5% conversion figure is Google’s own claim, but it reinforces a basic holiday lesson: clean feeds and better product information can be cheaper than buying more traffic.
The most actionable small-business play from these updates is to pair automation with measurement. Use ChatGPT Business to speed up content, reporting, and internal workflows. Use Google’s AI Max testing, Performance Planner, Data Manager, and enhanced conversions to see whether spend is actually working. Then tighten Merchant Center feeds and checkout paths so the traffic you buy has a better chance of converting.
