Shocking Car Chase: Cocaine and THC Found After Crash (Video)

Published on

In late June 2024, deputies from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin were conducting routine patrols on Interstate 43 when they observed a black Mazda violating traffic regulations in the town of Lafayette.

Shocking Car Chase Cocaine and THC Found After Crash

The vehicle, driven by 33-year-old Jerry Hamilton, displayed excessive window tint and an improperly placed front license plate. A routine traffic stop escalated dramatically when deputies noticed a distinct odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

Routine Stop Turns Chaotic

As deputies approached Hamilton’s vehicle, they requested his license and insurance. Hamilton attempted to call his wife to retrieve his insurance information, but the situation took a sharp turn when deputies asked him to step out of the vehicle, citing the smell of marijuana. Hamilton denied the allegations and, instead of complying, suddenly put the car in drive and fled the scene, striking one of the deputies in the process.

High-Speed Pursuit Through Counties

The pursuit began with Hamilton reaching speeds of up to 120 mph on the southbound lanes of I-43. Deputies reported light traffic conditions as Hamilton wove through lanes, attempting to evade law enforcement. Despite efforts to deploy spike strips at multiple points, Hamilton managed to swerve around them, continuing his dangerous flight into Rock County.

The situation escalated as additional officers and a state trooper joined the pursuit. Law enforcement noted Hamilton’s erratic behavior, including using the shoulder and median to avoid spike strips. His vehicle began emitting smoke, indicating mechanical stress from the prolonged high-speed chase.

The Crash and Arrest

Eventually, a Wisconsin state trooper successfully deployed spike strips, forcing Hamilton to lose control of his vehicle. The car careened through a median barrier, coming to a stop. Deputies quickly surrounded the vehicle and instructed Hamilton to exit. He initially resisted, claiming he feared for his life and accusing officers of attempting to harm him.

Hamilton was visibly distressed, repeatedly expressing fear and remorse. Deputies secured him and ensured he received medical attention for minor injuries sustained during the crash. A search of his vehicle revealed substantial evidence of drug-related offenses, including 185 grams of marijuana, 20 grams of cocaine and crack cocaine, THC gummies, a vape pen, and other paraphernalia.

Hamilton faced multiple felony charges as a result of his actions, including first-degree recklessly endangering safety, vehicle fleeing, battery to an officer, and possession with intent to deliver cocaine and THC. He was also charged with misdemeanor resisting or obstructing an officer. Every charge was a repeat offense for Hamilton. Additionally, he received 17 traffic violations, totaling nearly $5,000 in fines, including one for operating while intoxicated (OWI).

Following his arrest, Hamilton was held in custody for 11 days before being released on a $15,000 cash bond. The case remains a stark example of how routine traffic stops can quickly escalate into high-stakes scenarios involving significant risks to public safety.

Conclusion

The pursuit and subsequent arrest of Jerry Hamilton underscore the dangers posed by high-speed chases and drug-related activities. The incident highlights the critical role of law enforcement in managing such situations and ensuring public safety. Hamilton now faces significant legal repercussions, with multiple felony charges that may lead to lengthy incarceration.
